About this work

We are excited to launch a new edition by London-based artist Abi Ola, who showed at Kupfer alongside Anika Roach in the exhibition 'The Gaze Is a Singular Act' in September 2020.

Ola’s paintings, collages, performances and photographs weave her family history with historical research around the use of patterns in several tribal cultures. The three photographs commissioned by Kupfer Editions are part of a series created in her own bedroom during the pandemic. The photographs are performative, and Ola chose to use only black and white in order to emphasise the repetitiveness of symbols and shapes.

About the artist

Abi Ola is a London-based artist working across screen printing, oil painting, performance and photography. Her practice looks at her family history through the appropriation of distant relatives’ fashion styles, taking inspiration from old family photographs to invent her own pictorial vocabulary of pattern designs.

Recent exhibitions include her solo show at The Building Centre, as part of The Bloomsbury Festival Art Prize (2020-21), "The Gaze Is a Singular Act", Kupfer (2020) and the ASC Gallery (2020). She is currently in the final year of her Master Of Fine Arts at The Slade School Of Fine Art (2019-2021), and completed her Bachelor Of Fine Arts at Goldsmiths, University Of London (2016-2019).
