Mute/Unmute (Dominic Cummings)

In mid-March 2020, Joey Bryniarska installed her show Evil Genus at Kupfer, but the show never opened and two days later the UK government announced that social contact and non-essential travel should cease.
A year later, Bryniarska will install Mute/Unmute (Dominic Cummings), a site-specific text work in Kupfer's 213 space which reads "AREN'T THE BLUEBELLS LOVELY?". The phrase originates from a witness statement claiming that Dominic Cummings was seen walking in a bluebell wood near Durham on 19th April last year and was overheard saying these words. This second lockdown trip has always been refuted by Downing Street and remains a hanging question. Cummings, although investigated, was never prosecuted or fined by police for breaking lockdown laws citing a 'reasonable excuse'. The text work will be made using chalk, a non-permanent material most often associated with children playing outside and will be maintained for the life of the work. It maps another, very disparate, urban walk through East London.
The work will be followed by a limited edition released after 19th April 2021.

Joey Bryniarska (b.1981, Swindon) is a British/Polish artist based in London. Recent exhibitions include Serpent and Shadow, the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2018); The Materiality of the Invisible, Marres House for Contemporary Culture, Maastricht (2017); Give Way, Wexford Arts Centre, Ireland (2015); ‘A Union of Voices', Horatio Junior Gallery, London (2014); 'On Reflection', Postbox Gallery, London (2014); 'Stopped Clocks in Places of Busyness', Fold Gallery, London (2013); and'Mind Rhymes', Hidde van Seggelen Gallery, London (2013). She has received a number of high-profile awards and residencies: the Jan van Eyck Academie (2014-17); the British School at the Rome (2009-2011); and Spike Island (2005). She completed her undergraduate degree at University College Falmouth in 2004 and received a postgraduate diploma from the Royal Academy Schools in 2009. She is a tutor on the BA Fine Art course at Central Saint Martins, UAL, and is a Visiting Artist at the Warburg Institute, London.
