Lucy Stein on Carole Gibbons in Frieze:
“I was so happy to see a painting by Carole Gibbons included in a group show at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, Scotland, last year, as she has been persistently under-recognized in the city – her home city. …. At that time I had no idea of the hardships that a woman of her generation would have had to endure in order to persist with – and continue to believe in – such a unique and personal painting project.”
Carole Gibbons (b.1935, Glasgow) is a Glasgow based artist who had some early success with acquisitions from several Scottish Museums, awards from the Scottish Arts Council and several retrospectives in the 1970’s and 80’s. Though her work is largely unseen - apart from by a small body of Scottish painters - she is unlike many of her male contemporaries who left Glasgow and painted in an abstract tradition.
Still painting at 86 years of age, the artist has flown somewhat under the radar for decades, despite a broad and notable body of work.
Gibbons has been championed by a number of writers, critics, and gallerists throughout her career; despite this, opportunities to see her work in person have historically been few and far between, especially in London.
As a young woman, Gibbons was unable to receive the attention she deserved because of gender inequality; now, Gibbons lives in a society more accepting of women and female creative practices, but is newly discriminated against on the basis of her age. Opportunities for older artists are lacking, the art world caught up in what one could call the celebration of a ‘cult of youth’. Gibbons has found herself caught in the crosshairs of these two biases.
All funds raised by selling Gibbons’ print edition Spanish Cat will enable Kupfer to champion the artist’s work and will cover shipping, framing and installation costs.
