calling from the land of seeds

I collect stars dreams and alter-egos

I eat symbols both practical and magic I stare at leaves until they speak

I am the soil, a constant sedimentation of notes and quotes

roots nourished by incantation and accumulation

a bag of infinite space made of hay clay plexiglass paint or china

embodied forms in the making… formless until no more

tired of my self-containment

I long for a moment of ocean

still there are seeds to be gathered and room in the bag of stars is a collection of new works by artists Goia Mujalli, Laima Leyton, Maria Konder, Penelope Kupfer and Stephan Doitschinoff, playing with the idea of artworks as incorporeal species – or spirits. Curated by Penelope Kupfer. The exhibition title was borrowed from Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction (1986).

Goia Mujalli works with painting, embroidery, stitching and screen-printing. Her work draws on the identity and origins of plants to create a library of motifs.

Laima Leyton is an artist, musician and activist whose practice fuses music, performance, sound and audience interaction.

Maria Konder is a multidisciplinary artist working with painting, sculpture, performance, video, the occult and witchcraft.

Penelope Kupfer is a visual artist focusing on issues of identity, selfhood and the family through drawing, painting, ceramics and weaving.

Stephan Doitschinoff is a self-taught artist working with painting, sculpture, video, installation and performance.
